The PSP Practicum model is designed to provide clinical students (MFT-bound and Psychologist-bound) with practical clinical experience. Participation in a Practicum segment is voluntary but will earn course credit, depending on the enrolled program, and will count toward the internal PSP clinical hours requirement which, similarly, depends on the enrolled program.
The Practicum model allows for different Practicum sites. Formal agreements with site locations are being developed with the approval of the President.
A Practicum segment is eleven weeks or one PSP term. Supervision for our students will involve a PSP Faculty member providing supervision in a group setting, and will include supervision provided by the Site Director.
The typical applicant will have successfully completed PSY 606, 607, 608, 610, and 611 or equivalent coursework at the masters level before matriculation at PSP. Specific Practicum sites may require additional coursework. Students without these qualifications may apply.
Interested students must complete the Practicum Segment Application and forward it to Provost Dr. Elizabeth Eubanks at PSP by hand delivery, mail, or fax (916-364-5511). Applications will be forwarded by PSP to the Site Director, who must approve individual applicants. A site orientation will be held at the beginning of each segment term.
A Practicum requires a course grade and counts as 2 units of credit of PSY 690 or PSY 890. The other 2 units of these courses will be taken during an internship.
In addition to the two units for 690/890 that can be fulfilled with the Practicum, Doctoral students may use up to 4 units (two additional segments) of Practicum as elective credits, for a total of 6 units (3 segments) total practicum credit. MFT students do not have electives in their program, and are thus limited to utilizing two units from PSY 690.
The two units constitute 16 contact hours of supervision over the 11 week period of a Practicum segment. A Practicum site may have up to 8 Trainees.
Key oversight personnel will be the PSP Provost and the Site Supervisor.
The PSP Practicum supports a philosophical underpinning of our school that learners learn best by doing. Although clinical students will eventually be able to enter into formal internships that will accumulate supervised professional experience for a State license, this voluntary Practicum allows the motivated student to gain valuable experience earlier in their educational program, and begin the process of program-specific clinical hours.
Current Site Availability
As of Spring Term, 2005, we have one site agreement, with the Adult Rehabilitation Center of the Salvation Army, located at the corner of 16th and D Streets in Sacramento. The ARC is the site from which all Salvation Army trucks come and go in the greater Sacramento area. There are 80+ men who live and work at the site, and there are typically 50+ people on the waiting list. These men are chemically addicted and present a wide range of psychopathology.
